Follow these simple steps that you can do yourself to get your HVAC equipment ready for summer.

Start Inside The House!

  2. Check any exposed ductwork for leaks and wear. All leaky ductwork does is waste money by dumping your cool air into areas of your home where you don’t need to be cooled off.
  3. Unblock and clean your air vents and registers. You want to cool off your home and not the underside of your couch. Remove obstacles that may block air from flowing freely into your home.
  4. Change your air filter. Changing your air filter is the most important task that you can do regularly for your HVAC equipment. Grab your phone and set up an appointment in your calendar to replace your air filter quarterly.
  5. Check your breakers and power switches. Checking your breaker box is easy; open the door and make sure all your breakers are in the on position. Double-check that your A/C unit if equipped with a power switch is turned on.

Outside Your Home Or Office

  1. Remove any items leaning against or around your A/C unit. Check for obstructions around the condenser and fan. Things like ivy, weeds, grasses, and furniture. Block airflow that you need to keep units operating at peak performance.
  2. Inspect the refrigerant lines and electrical wires. Mice, rats, and the Sun can cause wear and tear on these crucial parts of your cooling system. If you see any issues or areas of concern, please contact a professional. Fixing refrigerant, and electrical issues yourself can lead to serious injury to yourself or your equipment.

Test Your HVAC System

(Only after you have done your due diligence and are satisfied with how your equipment looks.)

  1. Set your thermostat to a lower temperature and switch the A/C or cooling feature to “On”.
  2. Go outside and listen to your A/C unit. Look to ensure that your fan and condenser are operating as you expect. Listen for any strange or irregular sounds coming from the A/C unit. If you hear anything out of the ordinary, immediately shut down the system and contact a professional. The air coming out of the top of the unit should feel warm as warm air is being removed from your home by the system. Run this test for 10 – 15 minutes and check your vents for cool airflow.
